Abstract:

Introduction: Dandruff is a common scalp condition in which small pieces of dry skin flake off the scalp. Hibiscus leaves are known to act as astringent and help reduce excess oil secretion. Aloe vera has moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effect on skin.
Objective: To assess the effectiveness of hibiscus-Aloe vera gel application on dandruff among young women.
Materials & Methods: A quasi-experimental research design was used. 40 participants were selected using non-probability purposive sampling technique and divided randomly into experimental and control group. Severity of dandruff was assessed using self-prepared descriptive rating scale. The tool was found to be reliable using inter-rater reliability (r=0.85). Equal amount of hibiscus leaves paste and Aloe vera pulp was blended to prepare the gel. Hibiscus-Aloe vera gel was applied to the scalp of participants in experimental group and regular shampoo for participants in control group twice weekly for 4 weeks.
Results: In experimental group, pre-test results showed 25% participants had mild dandruff and 75% had moderate-severe dandruff while post-test results showed 90% participants had mild dandruff and 10% had moderate-severe dandruff. In control group pre-test results showed 35% participants with mild dandruff and 65% with moderate-severe dandruff while post-test results remained same. No significant association was found between selected variables and pre-test and post-test dandruff scores using Fisher’s Exact test.
Conclusion: Hibiscus-Aloe vera gel is effective to reduce dandruff among young women. It is a natural remedy to treat dandruff and economically beneficial to the community.
