Abstract:

Safe surgery protocols are essential for reducing complications and improving patient outcome. This protocol outlines evidence -based practice for ensuring patient safety during surgical procedures. The study aimed at finding the staff nurse's level of knowledge and skill related to safe surgery protocol. A study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of safe surgery protocol on knowledge and skill among staff nurses in surgical unit at selected hospitals in Chennai. A pre- experimental one group pretest - posttest research design was adopted for the study and 30 staff nurses who met inclusion criteria were selected using purposive sampling technique. The level of knowledge was assessed by using self-administered questionnaires and skill was assessed by using WHO surgical safety checklist and teaching of safe surgery protocol was done to surgical unit nurses which includes definition, purposes, preparations and protocol followed before, during and after surgery for 60 minutes which was followed by the posttest on 7th day using same tool. The study findings showed that the level of knowledge in pretest mean score was 11.83 with standard deviation of 2.21 and posttest mean score was 17.27 with standard deviation of 1.87. The paired `t` value was 12.857* which revealed that there was a highly statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest level of knowledge at p<0.05. The findings of the level of skill showed that mean score was 13.5 with standard deviation of 3.28 and posttest mean score was 36.37 with standard deviation of 1.56. The paired `t` value was 33.166* which revealed that there was a highly statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest level of skill at p<0.05.
