Sudden cardiac death is the leading cause of 15%-20% of all deaths worldwide. Cardiovascular disease has recently emerged as the leading cause of mortality and morbidity during hajj. Basic life support is extremely important in increasing survival rate of people who have undergone cardiac arrest. Most of the studies show poor to average knowledge and practice of basic life support and it indicate that there is need of proper training.
Objectives: To assess the knowledge and practice about basic life support among the Indian Hajj pilgrims, determine the effectiveness of video assisted teaching on it, and find out the association between the pre-test knowledge and practice with the selected socio demographic variable.
Method: 52 Indian Hajj pilgrims were selected by using convenient sampling method from Hajj building in Aziziya, Makkah. A structured questionnaire with semi structured interview schedule was used to assess the Knowledge. An observational checklist used to check the practice. The participants were categorized into a total of 5 groups with 8-12 members in each group. Then conducted the video assisted teaching program on Basic life support along with demonstrations and the traditional teaching method. The post test was conducted after 5 days of intervention as same as pre-test.
Result: The findings revealed that there is significant improvement in knowledge level (p<0.01) and practice (p<0.01) after the video assisted teaching program on BLS. There found association between nature of occupation and who attended BLS course before with knowledge and practice about BLS. Conclusion: There is need of proper BLS training among the hajj pilgrims to decrease the mortality and morbidity rate among the hajj pilgrims. The video assisted teaching program is very effective in improving knowledge and practice about the Basic Life support among the Indian hajj pilgrims.
