Background: A student`s life is subjected to different kinds of stressors, such as the pressure of academics with the obligations of success, uncertain future and difficulties envisaged for obligation for integration into the system. These students face social, emotional and physical and family problems which may affect their learning ability and academic performance. Some of them find it hard to cope with the stress and lag behind, while others see the pressure as challenge to work harder.
Methodology: A quantitative approach and a descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. A total of 60 hostel students from selected residential schools were selected by using non-probability convenience sampling technique. Structured stress and hostel related factors questionnaire was used to assess the hostel related stress and related factors.
Results: With regard to level of perceived stress 12(20%) respondents were having Mild stress, 40(66.7%) were having moderate stress and 08(13.3%) were having severe stress related to hostel accommodation. The hostel related factor scores for students ranged from 04-18. The mean hostel related score is 7.23 with standard deviation ±2.86 and median score is 7. The co-relationship between perceived stress and hostel related factors scores of hostel students was significant (r = 0.660) at p<0.05 levels indicating significant positive relationship between perceived stress and facilities provided at hostels. Obtained chi- square value are significant for variables like Number of siblings, Type of family and Previous experience and are not significant for other variables like age, gender, order of birth and duration of hostel stay at 0.05 level.
Conclusion: The overall findings of the study revealed that the facilities at the hostel aids in stress-reducing from the entities like separation from the parents, restriction for food, clothes, outing, etc. so it is advisable to frame the rules and regulations with some relaxation in order to help students to cope better, and also the facilities like recreation, meditation, play hours needs to be given importance while framing the rules and regulations of the hostel which would enable the students to grow as responsible citizen and contribute to the development of the nation.
